This flooding, if left unaddressed, could eventually reach the commercial runway. For example, at the Oakland Airport the general aviation runway is at risk from flooding from Doolittle Drive, a state owned roadway that sits between the Bay shoreline and the airport. Key FindingsĪirport operations are vulnerable to sea level rise and storm event impacts due to the disruption or damage that these may cause for shoreline and transportation assets owned and managed by others. The airport is owned and operated by the Port of Oakland, an autonomous department of the City of Oakland and is governed by a Board of Port Commissioners. Roadways and the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) facilities serving the airport were also analyzed as they are critical to ensuring passenger and cargo movement, and employee access. The OAK airport facilities evaluated in the ART Alameda County Project included the commercial and general aviation runways, passenger and air cargo facilities, aircraft hangars, a fuel tank farm, a control tower, and a perimeter dike. OAK provides commercial airline and general aviation services, and handles over half of the Bay region’s domestic freight and airmail. This study built on lessons learned from ART projects and highlights the vulnerabilities to SFO from storm events and sea level rise. SFO led a resilience study funded by the Coastal Conservancy of the San Bruno creek and Colma Creek watersheds including SFO. The findings, while specific to OAK offer examples of the types of vulnerabilities and issues that other airports will likely face. The ART Program conducted an in-depth evaluation of OAK as part of the ART Alameda County Project and the Oakland/Alameda Resilience Study. Loss of service at any one of these airports cannot be covered by the remaining airports and would result in major consequences regionally, nationally and internationally. The ribbon reflects sunlight during the day but can be lit up from the inside at night with different colors. These airports support hundreds of thousands of jobs and contribute billions of dollars to the Bay Area economy in addition to serving as essential transportation links for passenger and freight to the rest of the country and the world. The tower also includes a 147-foot-tall glass ribbon running down its center. It includes a three-story base building that houses administrative offices, computer equipment and a backup generator. Since it’s located between Terminals 1 and 2, travelers can pass by the base of the tower - and maybe take a photo of it shooting straight up through ceiling windows - without being able to access the tower itself. ![]() ![]() “We wanted to make this such that the tower controller - the one talking to the planes as they are landing and departing - had to move as little as possible, so they could see as much as possible from one position,” Naujoks told KQED. (Brian Watt/KQED)Īnd the look out the window itself is a lot better, Naujoks added. “It’s laid out much more ergonomically to where you can use the equipment and still look out the windows at the same time.” Frederick Naujoks, local president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association and a seven-year veteran at SFO. “There’s a lot of equipment that we started to get installed in the old tower but that this tower is designed for,” Naujoks said, pointing to ground surveillance radar as an example. (Brian Watt/KQED)Īirport and federal aviation officials said the new tower was necessary because the old one, which was 32 years old, did not meet current seismic standards and couldn’t be retrofitted practically.įrederick Naujoks, local president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association and a seven-year veteran at SFO, said the controllers had a lot of input into the new tower’s design and the placement of important equipment. “I think we've accomplished both of those things.” FAA chief Michael Huerta in the new tower. San Francisco was looking for a tower that would reflect the city, its unique culture and everything that San Francisco has to offer,” Huerta told KQED. “The FAA was looking for a tower that would be functional and ensure safety and efficiency. ![]() In a horizontal type, the purified air is blown from the back and moves towards the front of the working area. There are two main types of Laminar Flow Hoods : Horizontal Airflow and Vertical Airflow. The alternative.? Construct your own equipment. large corporations, universities, and research institutions can afford this but individual hobbyists like me can not. the one with the very lowest specifications costs more than one thousand US Dollars. However, the cost of the simplest form of the equipment is very prohibitive. ![]() A Laminar Flow Hood provides a small sterile work area, where you can carry out all your culture works without the risk of contamination, simply by flowing completely purified air at a specified rate. One equipment I wanted most but beyond my reach was a Laminar Flow Hood. Using different laminar air flow patterns, both configurations have unique benefits and suit specific applications. My interest in Mycology and Tissue culture started long back which led me to collect few laboratory equipment like Petri dishes, test tubes, weighing equipment, measuring glasses and also chemicals like Hydrogen Peroxide, Agar-agar and Potassium Permanganate. There are compelling arguments for either principle, and the choice is mainly contingent on conditions for clearance, type of laboratory, safety standards for an operator, and lab work surfaces. The first one sweeps airflow vertically and is called a vertical laminar flow hood. There are two laminar airflow hood types, which differ by the direction of the air movement. Environmental: an examination of biological samples, control experiments, and a lot more.Scientific research fields: comprising cell culture media, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) setup.Manufacturing and food processing: product runs, mechanism assembly, quality control.Pharmaceuticals: compounding of non-hazardous drugs, preparing injection solutions. Some examples of the most common uses include: They can be dedicated to an unlimited variety of tasks, yet the primary function remains the same – creating a particle-free operating space and ensure sample sterility. ![]() Laminar flow cabinets can be used in many industries. Also, it is important to note that it keeps samples protected from outside contamination but operators will have some exposure to the contents of it. There is no bacteria build-up from any samples since the design makes it easier to clean and disinfect. But the overall design and construction remain the same: these chambers are made from high-quality materials with no gaps or joints. Laminar flow hoods can be tailor-made to meet specific laboratory needs, and they are suitable for general lab work as well. It solves the issue with contamination-sensitive spaces using the following laminar flow hood working principle: laminar flow passes particles from the under-the-hood area (the filter face) to the back or bottom of the hood (sash opening), which is the exit area. an enclosed bench, made to prevent particulate contamination. What Is a Laminar Flow Hood?Ī laminar flow hood is a special device, i.e. Since laminar flows can safely move the fluids in a straight, smooth pipe, this characteristic is used to ensure an operative area devoid of contaminants. This advancement has made its way to modern labs and has been utilized for laboratory enclosures. The mechanism of the laminar flow was developed in the early 1960s. It is often contrasted to turbulent flow when the fluid swirls and blends when moving along a confined space. It is characterized by uniformity in both velocity and direction. Laminar flow is described as a fluid (gas or liquid) flowing in layers, which tends to happen when there are minimal disturbances. To change the indentation of the last line in a paragraph, use the TeX command \parfillskip. This space is in addition to the indentation added by \parindent and \hangindent. The TeX commands \leftskip and \rightskip add additional space to the left and right sides of each line, allowing the formatting for subsequent paragraphs to differ from the overall document margins. \hangindent=0.7cm This paragraph has an extra indentation at the left. Now, we use word processing software, such as Microsoft Word, to set indentations. Technology has almost completely taken the manual typing of indentation spaces out of the hands of writers. To Set a Paragraph Indentation in Microsoft Word ![]() The writers who wait until they complete the rough draft of their manuscripts typically have trouble finding the right places to separate the text into paragraphs. Writers who add indents as they write organize their content through the creation of paragraphs. Although this method takes more time, the reasoning behind it makes sense. The Harvard style manual recommends indenting content as you type, as opposed to indenting after the manuscript is complete. Formal presentations should include only a few spaces of indentation, while casual content can use more indentation spaces. The number of indentation spaces varies depending on the style of writing. Writers should double space content that includes tables, headings, quotations, and references. Writers should manually set the reference position for indents to. APA recommends using hanging indentation for reference lists. Hanging indentation places the first line of a paragraph to the left of where the next line starts. APA requires most paragraphs to adhere to first line indentation. First line indentation begins to the right of where the next line begins. APA StyleĪPA style identifies two types of indentation: First line and hanging. But using the tab key for indentation can cause problems with some e-book software programs that do not recognize the tab key as a form of indentation. You hit the tab key between three and seven times to provide the proper space between the first line and the left margin. The Chicago Manual of Style requires all text to be double-spaced, including the notes and bibliography sections. Chicago recommends that writers indent the first line of a new paragraph by hitting the tab key. But make sure you follow the same style guide throughout your document Chicago style, APA style, and Harvard style all differ in their approaches to indentation. ![]() When in doubt, refer to a style guide to answer a question about formatting and sourcing content.
